Hartwell & Sons plumbing tools — three generations of craftsmanship
Who We Are

Stafford's Plumbing Family — Built on Trust, Not Turnover

Hartwell & Sons Plumbing began in 1971 when Derek Hartwell fitted his first boiler in a terraced house off Lichfield Road. Over fifty years later, his grandson Tom leads the same business — still based in Stafford, still answering the phone directly, still turning up on the day he says he will. That continuity isn't an accident. It's a deliberate choice to stay small enough to care about every job.

Tom is Gas Safe registered and holds full CIPHE membership, meaning every piece of work — from emergency leak detection to a complete bathroom installation — meets the highest professional standards in the industry. There are no subcontractors, no call centres, and no surprise charges. When you ring 01632 960107, you speak to someone who will be on your doorstep.

Hartwell & Sons serves homeowners across Stafford, Stone, Penkridge, and Cannock. The van is stocked daily with the parts most commonly needed for emergency callouts, which is how the team resolves the majority of urgent jobs — burst pipes, failing pressure valves, leaking radiators — within a single visit and without a callout charge.

Fifty Years of Stafford Plumbing

1971

Derek Hartwell Starts Out

Derek Hartwell qualifies as a plumber and takes on his first solo jobs around Stafford town centre, building a reputation for showing up on time and charging a fair price. His first commercial account is a letting agent on Greengate Street.

1988

Gas Safe Certification & First Van

Derek completes his CORGI gas certification — the predecessor to Gas Safe — and invests in the business's first dedicated works van. The Hartwell name becomes a familiar sight on driveways across the ST16 and ST17 postcode areas.

1997

Second Generation: Michael Joins

Derek's son Michael completes his Level 3 NVQ in Plumbing and Heating and joins the business full-time. The pair expand the service area to include Stone and Penkridge, taking on larger bathroom installation projects for the first time.

2009

CIPHE Membership Achieved

Hartwell & Sons earns full Chartered Institute of Plumbing and Heating Engineering membership, cementing the business's commitment to professional standards. This year also sees the first underfloor heating installation completed in a new-build in Weeping Cross.

2016

Tom Hartwell Takes the Helm

Third-generation plumber Tom Hartwell qualifies Gas Safe and assumes day-to-day leadership of the business. Tom introduces the no-callout-charge policy and same-day weekday response commitment that now defines the company's offer.

2023

500+ Five-Star Reviews

Hartwell & Sons passes 500 verified customer reviews with a 4.9-star average across Google and Checkatrade — a milestone that reflects over five decades of work done properly, the first time, by people who live in the same community as their customers.

The People Behind the Van

Hartwell & Sons is a small team by design. Every member is directly employed, fully qualified, and known personally to Tom. No agency workers, no last-minute strangers at your door.

What Hartwell & Sons Stands For

No Callout Charge

Stafford homeowners pay nothing simply for us turning up. Every weekday callout — including emergency visits — carries zero callout fee. You pay only for the work done.

Same-Day Weekday Response

For urgent jobs reported before noon on a weekday, we commit to a same-day visit. Burst pipe in Penkridge at 8am? A Hartwell plumber will be there that afternoon.

Gas Safe Registered

All gas work is carried out by Gas Safe registered engineers. You can verify our registration on the official Gas Safe Register before you book — no request needed.

CIPHE Qualified

Full membership of the Chartered Institute of Plumbing and Heating Engineering means our standards are set by the industry's governing body — not just our own judgement.

Three Generations Deep

A business that has served Stafford families since 1971 doesn't survive on sharp marketing. It survives because every job is done right and every customer is treated like a neighbour — because they are.

Transparent, Fixed Pricing

You receive a written quote before any work begins. The price on that quote is the price on the invoice. No add-ons discovered after the job, no vague hourly estimates.
